The metal-free option for dental implants, zirconia dental implants are safer and stronger than their titanium predecessor. The benefits of zirconia dental implants are many:
Dr. Saj Jivraj often prefer zirconia dental implants over titanium, due to the holistic approach that they take to dentistry. Zirconia has only been FDA-approved in the United States since 2011, and Dr. Jivraj was one of the first to market and utilize this technology with his integrative approach.
When looking for replacement teeth, there are a lot of factors to consider. Due to increasing interest in holistic medicine and the concern of putting anything synthetic in our bodies, more and more patients are asking questions about the makeup of dental implants. For most patients, getting dental implants is a big step towards improving their oral health and so we understand that they want to make sure that they do the best thing for their bodies.
Zirconia implants also are known for their favorable mechanical properties and their decreased chance of accumulating plaque, according to the Journal of Oral Implantology.
What is a Zirconia Dental Implant?
Dental implants are tooth root replacements, capped with a ceramic dental crown. The crown (replacement tooth) is connected to the implant with an abutment. Zirconia implants are somewhat new to the implant arena. In the US, we have been using Zirconia for implants since 2007 (Europe since the late 1980’s) while we have been using Titanium for dental implants since the 1960’s. Both materials are biocompatible offering high acceptance rates with the body promoting Osseointegration which means bone can grow around the implant material just as it does around our natural tooth roots. Currently, most FDA approved Zirconia implants are one piece. This means that the synthetic tooth root and the abutment are connected whereas they are two pieces with Titanium dental implants giving the dentist more control over a few elements of the entire implant placement process.
Who Is A Candidate for Zirconia Implants?
A metal-free approach is well tolerated by the human body. We routinely use PRGF stem cells to improve the healing process when using zirconium tooth replacements. Although zirconia implants aren’t right for everyone, following are several characteristics of ideal candidates:
- Healthy gums.
- High-quality, healthy jawbone is required to allow implants to become integrated into the jaw and effectively serve as a tooth root.
- Commitment to a strong oral hygiene regimen to care for the implanted teeth and surrounding gums. Brushing and flossing daily are essential.
- Regular visits to the prosthodontist for follow-up are also important.
Critical criteria for success also include no metabolic diseases, no smoking, and ideal occlusal parameters and restorative parameters, Dr. Jivraj said.
